Toft-ware plate

This 17th century Toft-ware plate with the slip trailed head of King Charles II is one of my favourite objects at Cliffe Castle Museum. I love the quirky decoration but what really fascinates me is the unconventional repair. Holes were drilled into the broken pieces and then skilfully ‘laced’ together with twine.
